American Express Gold Card
Summary: The American Express® Gold Card is widely considered one of the absolute best mid-tier reward cards on the market, particularly if a significant portion of your budget goes toward food and dining. However, it comes with a $325 annual fee, meaning its value entirely depends on how naturally you can utilize its hyper-specific monthly statement credits and high-earning point categories. For newcomers, I would recommend getting cards with the $95 annual fee, and once you are used to those cards, then get this one as this is undisputed in terms of using it on food.

Personal Experience: This was my first card with an annual fee (free because I am in the military). I learned that I needed to get this card before the platinum card in order to get both welcome offers. Because I lived in the dorms inside the military base, part of my paycheck had to go towards eating at the dining facility there. That meant I shouldn’t be spending money on food, which is the main purpose of the Amex Gold card. I still ate out sometimes and shopped at the military grocery store (Commissary), and once I got out of the dorms in February 2026, the card definitely became worth it. It was cool introduction on teaching me on how to spend enough to get to the sign up bonus, learning how to redeem points (with inexperience use it on gift cards and statement credits), and knowing how to use credits.
- 4X on both grocerries and dining
- Total credits more than annual fee
- Best Amex card for most
- Amex points are average
- No travel benefits
- Some places don't accept Amex
